Bus kills cop in Dhaka

A traffic police officer was killed after a bus ran him over in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area early today.

Khairul Islam, 30, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), was on duty when the accident took place, said Syed Ziauzzaman, assistant commissioner (AC) of Demra Zone.

A bus hit and ran over Khairul in front of Jatrabari Police Station around 1:30am, the AC said.

Khairul was declared dead by doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 3:00am after being rushed there, he added.

Police could not arrest the bus driver as he managed to flee the scene along with the vehicle. Police are trying to capture the vehicle and the driver through footages of CCTV cameras around the area, Ziauzzaman said.

The body has been kept at DMC morgue for autopsy.
