Budgetary allocation for edu inadequate

Speakers at a seminar yesterday said the budgetary allocation for the education sector remains inadequate every year, leaving little scope for investment on quality education for all.

They demanded more allocation for education for 2019-20 fiscal, so that the nation can become well educated. 

The demand came at a seminar on “Upcoming Budget and Education Sector: Our expectations”, organised by Movement for World Education Rights at Jatiya Press Club.

Speaking as chief guest, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said that the budgetary allocation for education, on its own, may sound impressive but when the increasing population is considered, it seems inadequate.

“Allocation for education should be increased as we want to transform the population into human resources,” she said. 

Dipu Moni said the sector needs to be given the highest importance as the country will have to move forward.

She said dreams of bringing all children to classrooms have been implemented, and now we have to reduce the dropout rate in primary education.

Faruk Ahmed Arif, convener of the organisation, proposed that government allocate Tk 1.40 crore to bring all government and non-government educational institutions under the upcoming budget.    

Academic Rasheda K Chowdhury urged the government to ensure nutritious food for school children by allocating sufficient budget.
