Bring Bangabandhu’s killers to book: Nirmul Committee

Pro-Liberation War platform Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee yesterday demanded that the government ensure trial and due punishment of those behind the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The committee raised the demand during an online conference on the topic "Bangabandhu's Political Philosophy and the Unfinished Trial of the Perpetrators of 1975", arranged in observance of National Mourning Day and the 45th anniversary of the assassination of Bangabandhu, said a press release.

Presiding over the online conference, the committee's President Shahriar Kabir said the country's 1972 constitution was a reflection of Bangabandhu's political philosophy.

The country wouldn't have to experience the extent of bloodshed, torture, criminal acts, and bombing in the name of religion if the constitution of 1972 remained unchanged, he said.

Addressing the conference, eminent author and educationist Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said the constitution of 1972 talks about a uniform education system in the country.

He said Bangabandhu bestowed the responsibility of adopting the newly independent Bangladesh's education policy upon eminent scientist Dr Qudrat-e-Khuda.

The Qudrat-e-Khuda commission recommended incorporating the state's four core principles cited in the constitution in the curricula of primary to post-graduate education, he added.

"If Bangabandhu's education policy remained effective then the country would not have to experience communalism and killings in the name of religion," he added.

Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury said many countries across the globe have laws to try and punish perpetrators posthumously.

He stressed for posthumous trial of those who were involved in Bangabandhu's assassination after bringing required changes in related laws.
