Be responsible to ease case backlog

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain yesterday called upon judges to conduct judicial activities with responsibility, in a bid to clear the backlog of cases at Supreme Court.
He said this at a meeting with the judges of Appellate and High Court divisions at Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge.
A few days after publishing of “Justice Audit Bangladesh 2018”, the meeting was held to find a way out to case backlog.
According to the report, the country’s courts have a backlog of 34 lakh cases, and the situation could have been “different” if everyone went to the courts with their issues.
German organisation GIZ, UK Aid, and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics carried out the audit last year in all 64 districts.
Only 13 percent people of Bangladesh prefer going to courts to get justice, and the rest -- despite having faith in the judiciary -- would rather have community leaders solve their issues, according to the report.
Speaking at the report launch on April 27, the chief justice had said he would sit with judges within a month to prepare a plan for solving the issue.
Yesterday, judges at the meeting demanded appointment of more judges to reduce case backlog quickly, sources confirmed.
