BCL men 'beat up' student at RU

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists allegedly beat up a student of Rajshahi University (RU) inside a dormitory on Friday night.

The incident took place in the guest room of Madar Bux Hall around midnight, said resident students of the dormitory.

Several leaders of BCL beat up the student, Abdur Rahman, a third-year student of Political Science department, for about an hour and his screaming could be heard from outside the room, they also said.

Rahman said he is a resident student of Shaheed Habibur Rahman hall and on that night, he went to Madar Bux Hall for collecting class notes from a senior student.

The BCL men -- including Asadullah Hil Galib, training affairs secretary of RU BCL; Abdullah Hil Kafi, assistant secretary of RU BCL; and Shuvro Deb, an activist of RU BCL -- forcibly took him to the guest room and beat him up with iron rods and wooden sticks and forced him to admit that he was taking drugs in the dorm, he claimed.

They also recorded a video of him confessing to taking drugs, before dropping him off at the medical centre of the university, he said, adding that he had to receive medical treatment later at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

However, when contacted, all three BCL men -- mentioned by Rahman and other witnesses -- refuted the allegations made against them.

Madar Bux Hall Provost Dr Abdul Alim said he has informed authorities of the incident and would take necessary steps advised by the authorities.

Meanwhile at a press conference yesterday, RU BCL claimed that Rahman was taking drugs with a few outsiders in Madar Bux Hall and he was injured while fleeing the place. BCL activists only took him to the guest room for interrogation and he was not beaten up.
