BCL leader arrested for assaulting journo, another in Ashulia

Police yesterday arrested a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader on the charge of assaulting a journalist and a Muktijoddha Projonmo League leader in Ashulia of Savar.

The arrestee-- Shamiul Alam Shamim -- is president of Ashulia unit of the pro-Awami League student organisation, BCL sources said.

Shamim along with his supporters beat up Abdullah Al Wahid, Savar correspondent of My TV, when he went to Kurgaon to cover a report on land grabbing, said the journalist.

There has been a dispute over the land between Shamim and a relative of Obaidul Islam, president of Dhaka district unit of Muktijoddha Projonmo League, said Obaidul.

The attackers also assaulted Obaidul as he was helping the reporter, he added.

A written complaint was filed with Ashulia police Station in connection with the attack, said Sub-inspector Nahid Hassan.
