BCL has turned Ducsu into Ducsu League: VP Nur

Those who were elected from Chhatra League’s panel in Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) held a meeting with vice-chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzman on Friday night without notifying the student union’s vice president and social service affairs secretary, Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur alleged yesterday.

“Most decisions of Ducsu were taken without informing the VP and social service affairs secretary Akhtar Hossen. On last Friday a meeting was held without us, which is contradictory to the rules and regulations,” said Nur while speaking at a press conference in Ducsu auditorium.

Ducsu’s assistant general secretary Saddam Hussain said they did not let Nur know about the meeting as he did not notify them of leading a protest demanding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release. Saddam is also general secretary of BCL’s DU unit.

Nurul Haque Nur and Akhtar Hossen were elected on March 11 as vice president and social service affairs secretary from Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad’s panel, the platform which spearheaded the quota reform movement.

Most Ducsu members elected from BCL panel were present at Friday night’s meeting at the VC’s residence.

Talking to The Daily Star, Saddam Hussain said, “VP Nur is busy with the onion issue and the protest demanding Khaleda Zia’s release. He has protested for Khaleda’s release without notifying us, then why would we inform him about the meeting?”

However, VP Nur said BCL spreading propaganda against him is nothing new.

“Ducsu members who won from BCL panel single-handedly took many decisions and in most cases, they did not inform me. They have turned the student union into Ducsu League,” he said.

“After seeing the vice chancellor’s role, it seems that he is not a VC of the students, but the VC of BCL; not the president of Ducsu, but the president of Ducsu league.

“As VP of this student union, I have a right to speak not only for the students of the university but also about national crises. BCL cannot interfere in my rights,” he added.

Asked, DU VC and president of Ducsu Prof Akhtaruzzaman said, “The meeting was not a formal one. Ducsu general secretary Golam Rabbani said two days ago that they want to meet me. Later, the meeting was held on Friday.”
