BCL drops 19 from central committee

Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday dropped 19 members from the organisa-tion’s recently announced committee, following various allegations.

At an emergency meeting of the executive committee, BCL high-ups took the deci-sion, reads a press release.

The vacant posts will be filled through a selection process later on, the press release added.

Asked why the names were not disclosed, party general secretary Golam Rabbani said, “Apa (PM Sheikh Hasina) is our High Court, Supreme Court, and constitution. We will submit all the names, information and documents regarding the controversy to her once she returns from abroad.”

“We will notify the 19 post-holders through letters about their removal,” Rabbani added.

Post-deprived faction of BCL, who have been staging a demonstration since Monday, termed the move a “new farce.”

Rakib Hossain, spokesperson of deprived faction and former programme and planning affairs secretary, said “This is nothing but a part of the drama staged by the BCL president and general secretary. We want complete details of all controversial leaders in the committee and their expulsion.”

He threatened to continue their agitation otherwise.

Meanwhile, BCL has withdrawn its temporary expulsion order against Jarin Dia, former member of central executive committee, as she repented her mistakes, reads another press release issued by BCL last night.

On May 13, the pro-Awami League student body announced its 301-member full-fledged central committee, triggering controversy and demonstrations by some of those who could not make it to the committee.

During a meeting with BCL leaders at Gono Bhaban on May 15, AL chief Sheikh Hasina directed BCL president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon to drop “controversial” leaders from its committee, if allegations against them were found true.

Hours later, BCL general secretary disclosed the names of some “controversial” leaders at a press conference in AL’s political office in the capital’s Dhanmondi.
