Journalist assaulted at Begum Rokeya University

Claims attackers were BCL men

A journalist was beaten up allegedly by several Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Friday night.

Rabbi Hasan Sabuj, 23, is undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The university correspondent of the daily Jugantor, Sabuj is also a second year journalism student of the university.

Talking to reporters at the hospital yesterday, Sabuj said he was chatting with one of his female friends on the campus around 8:30pm.

All of a sudden, some BCL activists, led by Golam Morshed, went there and started harassing them, Sabuj said.

They started beating him when he protested, he added.

Hearing his screams, other students and members of BRUR police outpost rescued them and sent him to the hospital, said Sabuj.

Tabiur Rahman, a teacher of the mass communication and journalism department of BRUR, told The Daily Star that Sabuj sent a written complaint against Golam Morshed and several others to the university authorities.

However, Tusher Kibria, president of the university unit of BCL, said no BCL activist was involved in the attack.
