Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah yesterday formally took office as mayor of Barishal City Corporation (BCC) at a grand reception in Barishal city.

BCC arranged the reception on Fazlul Haque Avenue near the Nagar Bhaban. The entire city was decorated with colourful lighting, billboards and gates on the occasion.

Before arriving in Barishal on Monday night, the mayor paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his tomb in Tungipara.

Barishal Divisional Commissioner Ram Chandra Das presided over the programme where 40 newly elected ward councillors were also present.

The ceremony was attended by around 5,000 people including invited guests and city dwellers.

Declaring action against past corruption, Mayor Serniabat in his speech said the city councillors will no longer be allowed to conduct contractual businesses during his tenure.

Until the BCC is able to pay off its debts, currently over Tk 350 crore, he will not accept the remuneration as mayor, he also said.

Among others, Awami League lawmaker (Barishal-2) Talukder Md Yunus also spoke at the programme.
