Barishal University authorities announced yesterday morning that the university will remain closed indefinitely. The decision was made after continued protests from students surrounding an Independence Day programme.

Vice-chancellor Dr SM Imamul Haque said “We had to take this decision for the sake of peace, discipline, and overall safety of students and staff members.”

Authorities also issued a notice asking students to vacate the dormitories within 5pm yesterday.

Protesting students gathered in front the university administration building after the closure notice was announced. They held a press conference presenting their ten-point demand, which includes the resignation of BU VC.

Students strongly criticised the sudden decision to close the university.

“We will continue protesting until the VC resigns,” one student told the Daily Star

Another student said authorities have shut down electricity and water supply at dorms.

Protests sparked after the students claimed that they had been left out from the university's Independence Day programme on campus.

They started demonstrating on March 26, subsequently boycotting classes and examinations to press home their demands, and protesting the VC's remark calling them “Razakarer Bachcha.”
