Bangladeshi patients need not go abroad for treatment

Renowned cardiac surgeon Prof Dr Devi Prasad Shetty has said Bangladeshi patients do not need to go to abroad for treatment, as a lot of quality doctors are here in the country.
Speaking at the inauguration of Imperial Hospital in Chattoram on Saturday, Prof Shetty said people of this subcontinent are three times as vulnerable to heart diseases than that of Europe and America, due to genetic predisposition.
Eating unhealthy and reluctance to physical exercise are two major reasons for young people getting heart diseases, said Prof Shetty.
“I see 60 to 80 patients a day, and operate one or two major heart surgeries everyday... so amid this busy schedule, why have I come to Bangladesh? What is my mission of working with Bangladesh? I have a single mission that I want no patient from Bangladesh to go to India or other countries for treatment,” he said.
“The Imperial Hospital has been built in Chattogram for this mission,” said Prof Shetty, adding, “If the authorities allow it, I would like to perform some surgeries at the hospital.”
“Patients of Bangladesh must be treated in Bangladesh,” he said. “You have a lot of talents in the country and what you have to change is only mindset.”Dr Shetty also said he would train up young Bangladeshi doctors.
Dr Rabiul Hossain, chairman of the hospital, said 10 percent beds of 375-bed hospital would be preserved for the poor.
Lawmaker and former minister Engr Mosharraf Hossain said establishment of international-standard hospitals like this would encourage people not to go abroad for treatment.
