‘Ban Tiktok to save the youth’

Writ petition seeks curbs on three social media apps

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on authorities to stop operations of smartphone apps -- Bigo Live, Tiktok and Likee, "in order to protect the young generation from social degradation".

Md JR Khan Robin submitted the petition as a public interest litigation to the HC, also praying to this court to issue a rule asking authorities to explain why their inaction to stop the use of these apps should not be declared illegal.

He said in the petition that the young generation of the country is being addicted to these apps and are "losing their morality and social values".

Sometimes, youths are being involved in crimes by being instigated such apps, Robin said, adding that such apps have been banned in some neighbouring countries -- such as India and Pakistan, and Indonesia.

JR Khan Robin told The Daily Star that he will move the writ petition before the HC after it reopens on January 3 following its ongoing annual vacation.
