Awareness on diabetes must

Say speakers; 3-day 'Diabetes Mela' underway

Leading a balanced and healthy lifestyle can help reduce diabetes, said speakers at a programme yesterday. They also stressed the need for awareness at the session as part of a three-day “Diabetes Mela” at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh.

Adulterated and unhygienic food is causing various health complexities and that must be addressed, speakers said.

Speaking as chief guest, former minister Asaduzzaman Noor said people waste money and harm themselves by smoking. “There is no alternative to avoiding such bad habits for staying healthy.”

AK Azad Khan, secretary general of Bangladesh Diabetic Samity, said diabetes has become a global epidemic. “But it can be prevented through a disciplined lifestyle.”

As part of the fair, pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies and hospitals have set up stalls. Visitors can check diabetes and get awareness tips from experts for free at the fair.

Bangla daily Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, noted thespian Mamunur Rashid and Asiatic Society of Bangladesh President Prof Mahfuza Khanam spoke at the programme, among others. The fair is organised by Congressia.
