Arrest warrants against Tarique, Fakhrul

A Dhaka court yesterday issued arrest warrants against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and seven other leaders, hours after a case was filed against them on charge of issuing death threat Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder passed the order after AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro-Awami league organisation, filed the case. 

The court set August 28 for return of the execution of arrest warrant issued against the accused, Siddique confirmed to The Daily Star.

The seven others are: BNP leaders Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, BNP chairperson’s advisor Aman Ullah Aman, suspended Buet teacher Hafizur Rahman Rana and Chhatra Dal leader Emdadul Haque Bhuiyan.

In the case, the complainant alleged that Hafizur Rahman Rana, an expelled teacher of Buet, sent him a letter on July 25 this year.

According to the case statement, it was alleged that teacher, in his letter, threatened the assassination of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the complainant by Islamic State (IS) on August 15.

It also mentioned that the memorial complex of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would be destroyed by bombing. It has been said that a new Bangladesh will be established under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the letter said.

The complainant also appealed to the court to issue an arrest warrant against the accused for their alleged involvement with committing such offenses.
