Another worker dies at Ctg ship-breaking yard

Yet another worker of a ship-breaking yard in Chattogram died on Sunday night, bringing the number of deaths to 18 so far this year, the highest in the last nine years.

The latest accident occurred in Golden Iron Works Limited ship-breaking yard at Sitakunda on Sunday evening. An iron plate hit worker Md Biplob, 25, while he was working, said Palash Kumar Das, inspector of department of inspection for factories and establishment, Chattogram.

Biplob was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead, said Alauddin Talukder of CMCH Police Outpost.

On October 21, another worker died at the yard of SN Corporation in a similar accident.

A total of 18 workers were killed in different ship-breaking yards so far this year, which is the highest in the last eight years, said Mohammad Ali Shahin, Bangladesh coordinator of the Brussels-based NGO Shipbreaking Platform. In 2009, at least 25 people were killed in accidents at the ship-breaking yards.
