Aminul Islam wins Golapganj by-polls

Rebel Awami League (AL) candidate Aminul Islam Rabel won the by-election and became chairman of Golapganj municipality in Sylhet yesterday.

The results were declared by Khorshed Alam, returning officer of the by-election and senior election officer.

Rabel got 4149 votes while his nearest contender AL nominated Jakaria Ahmed Paplu got 3957, said the returning officer, adding, two other independent candidates, Golam Kibria Chowdhury Sahin and Mohius Sunnah Chowdhury Narjis got 3558 and 3354 votes respectively.

The chairman’s post fell vacant after Sirajul Jabbar died on May 31.

He won the election in 2015 after defeating the then chairman and AL candidate Jakaria Ahmed Paplu.
