Accidents leave seven dead in two days

At least seven people were killed and 15 injured in six separate road accidents across the country on Wednesday and yesterday.

In Faridpur, a three-wheeler driver was killed in a road accident in Chorkchar area of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur around 11:30am yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Emon Bepari, 20, son of late Abul Bapari of Jaduarchar village under Rajor upazila.

Quoting locals, Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Police Station, said the accident occurred when Emon lost control over his vehicle and the three-wheeler fell into a roadside ditch. Later, Emon died while locals were taking him to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex.

In Savar, an RMG worker was killed near her factory as a bus ran her over.

The deceased was identified as Nurjahan, 24, of Gaibandha, a swing operator of Al-Muslim Garments in Savar’s Ulail area.

Nurul Islam, a sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station, said the accident took place on Dhaka-Aricha highway around 7:30am as a bus named “Lamha” ran her over while she was walking to her workplace by the highway. She died on the spot.

On Wednesday, a madrasa teacher was killed as a motorcycle carrying him collided with a running train in Joypurhat town.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Gaffar, 49, of Koroi village in Joypurhat Sadar upazila. He was an assistant teacher of Siddiqia Kamil Madrasa in Joypurhat.

Quoting witnesses, Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station, said Gafur was going through an unmanned level crossing at Sweeper Colony around noon on his motorcycle, when it collided with Dhaka-bound Drutajan Express, killing him on the spot.

In Dinajpur, a minor died in Khansama upazila of Dinajpur the same day.

Md Zisan, four-year-old son of Mominul Islam of Bhabki village under Khansama upazila of Dinajpur, was playing under his father’s tractor near their home. 

Md Mosabberul Islam, a neighbour, said, as the father drove the vehicle to go to work, Zisan went under the rear wheel and died on the spot.

In Chattogram, a woman was killed due to a head-on collision between two CNG-run auto-rickshaws in front of Kali Bari under Kudhurkhil union of Boalkhali upazila around 8pm on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Romita Das, 37, wife of Tapon Das, hailing from Kachukhain area of the upazila, said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Alauddin Talukder of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost.

Locals rescued the victim and sent her to CMCH where she succumbed to her injuries around 2am yesterday, said the ASI.

In Sylhet, two siblings were killed and around 15 injured when a bus plunged into a ditch beside Sylhet-Tamabil highway in Katagang area of Jaintiapur upazila on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Lubna Begum, 10, and Ahona Begum, 8 -- daughters of Showkat Ali of Fulbari village.

The accident occurred around 1pm when a Sylhet-bound bus from Jaintiapur upazila plunged into a roadside ditch while overtaking another bus, leaving the siblings dead on the spot.

Four severely injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Khan Md Moynul Jakir, officer-in-charge of Jaintiapur Police Station.

The other injured were taken to Jaintiapur Upazila Health Complex, the OC said, adding that the bodies of the deceased were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
