70 gold bars seized

Customs officials yesterday recovered 70 gold bars worth Tk 3.5 crore at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.

Kajol Nandi, revenue officer, said 60 gold bars were recovered from a Regent Airways flight that landed at 3:40pm from Bangkok.

The officials also recovered 10 more gold bars from another Regent Airways flight from Muscat. The bars were hidden inside handles of two pans, found in handbags, belonging to two passengers. The passengers -- Kamal Uddin and Asaduzzaman -- were detained.

SM Ziaur Rahman, station manager of Regent Airways, claimed that their cleaners found the gold bars and handed over to the customs.
