6 dead, 8 injured in other accidents

At least seven people were killed and eight injured in road accidents yesterday, report our correspondents and a news agency.

In Mymensingh, a schoolgirl was killed after a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit her at Duthnoi of Dhobaura upazila.

Mansura Akter (7), daughter of Monjurul Islam, was a first-grader at Duthnoi Govt Primary School, said locals.

Officer-in-Charge Ali Ahmed Mollah of Dhobaura Police Station said Mansura and other children were going home around noon. When they were standing in front of the school, the auto-rickshaw crashed into Mansura, killing her on the spot, he said.

On information, police recovered the body and seized the auto-rickshaw, but its driver managed to flee the scene.

A case was lodged and drives were underway to arrest him.

Elsewhere in the district, at least two people were killed and one was injured after a pick-up van and truck collided in Bhoraduba area of Bhaluka upazila.

The deceased are van driver Amirul Islam (30), and poultry trader Shamim Mia (35).

Quoting locals, police said the poultry carrying van hit the truck from behind after the van driver lost control over the vehicle, killing two on the spot around 3am.

On information, police and firefighters rescued the injured person and took him to the upazila health complex, they added.

Police also recovered the bodies and handed them over to family members. A case was lodged, and police seized the van.

In Tangail, two college students were killed and one was seriously injured after a bus ran over their motorcycle in Razabari area of Kalihati upazila at noon, said police.

The deceased are Imon (17) and Shawon (18), and the injured is Asif (18) -- all students of Elenga Shamsul Haque College.

Locals rescued the youths and sent them to Tangail General Hospital, where doctors declared Imon dead.

Shawon and Asif were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but Shawon succumbed to his injuries on the way there.

Police seized the bus but its driver and helpers managed to flee, they added.

In Manikganj, three people were injured as a car caught on fire after colliding with a truck in Tepra area of Shivalaya upazila.

Police said after the collision, the truck fell into a roadside ditch.

The injured are truck driver Abdul Aziz (25), his helper Sohag Apon (27) and car passenger Md Mofazzal (25). They were admitted to Shivalaya Upazila Hospital. Sohagh was shifted to Savar Enam Medical College Hospital after his condition deteriorated, they added. 

Four firefighting units doused the blaze, which originated from the car's battery, according to firefighters.

In Chattogram, Mohammad Ismail was killed following a collision between two covered vans at Takurdighirpar of Mirsarai upazila in the morning, reports BSS.

Police said after the accident, Ismail, who was helper of one of the vans, was taken to a hospital, where the duty-doctor declared him dead.

The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy, they added.

In Habiganj, Helena Begum (55) was killed on the spot and three were severely injured after a collision between a microbus and auto-rickshaw on Nabiganj-Aushkandi road of Nabiganj upazila around 1pm, said police and witnesses.

The injured -- deceased's husband Modarish Miah (60), son-in-law Mizanur Rahman and the auto-rickshaw driver – were rushed to the upazila health complex, reports BSS.

Later, the injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Police seized the vehicles and filing of a case was underway.
