65-year-old rape accused sent to jail

A Dhaka court yesterday sent a 65-year-old man to jail on charge of raping a  35-year-old woman in Savar on Saturday.

Arrested  Shohidullah Prodhan of Mozidpur area under  Savar municipality was detained on Saturday evening, hours after the victim informed police of the matter.

Later in the night, the victim -- a worker of a private clinic -- filed a case with Savar Police Station against Shohidullah.

According  to the case statement, the victim works as a marketing officer at a  private clinic. She had met Shohidullah on a work-related purpose around  two months ago. Shohidullah later proposed the victim to marry him, she said. 

On Saturday morning, he invited the victim to his daughter's house, saying he will marry her that day. After the victim went there, Shohidullah raped her after confining her to a room. Other members of the family were out of the house during the incident.

At one stage of the assault, the victim managed to break free by kicking the rapist and fled the  house. She immediately went to informed the matter to the police,  the victim added in the case statement.

AFM Sayeed, officer in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said they detained the elderly  man based on the victim's complaint, and was later shown arrested in the rape case.

The accused was sent to court without a remand prayer, and the court sent him to jail, said the OC. The victim was sent to One-Stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for medical tests, he said.
