5 thieves; 100 burglaries

5 members of burglary gang held in Ctg

After nearly 100 burglaries at different mobile and Bkash agent shops across the country, five members of an organised gang of thieves were arrested by police in Chattogram port city's Bakalia area early today.

The arrestees are Raju alias Rasel (26), Md Al Amin (20), Nasrin Akter Poly (32), Moharam Ali (22) and Md Siraj (24). After their arrests, police recovered 36 stolen brand new phones worth Tk three lakh from their possession.

They were arrested from Bakalia's Tulatoli area while they were selling the stolen mobile phones, said Md Raisul Islam, assistant Commissioner (Chawkbazar Zone) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

AC Raisul said the gang confessed that they burgled 100 mobile and Bkash shops in different shopping malls and markets of the country including Chattogram's Riazuddin Bazar, Tamakundi Bazar, Sanmar Ocean City and Shah Amanat market.

"With the help of their female accomplice, they first chose a target and collected information about the target's position, items as well as the market's environment and later executed their plan in the early hours of the morning, added AC Raisul.

They would break in the shops and take the wares. Afterwards, they would leave in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, our Chattogram correspondent reports quoting the AC.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakalia Police Station Nezam Uddin said, "The gang took away 36 brand new mobile phones from one 'Jamboo Mobile shop' situated on the second floor of Ittadi Shipping Complex under Karnaphuli police station yesterday morning.

"Later they tried to sell the stolen phones at Poly's resident at Tulatoli area where police held them, " added OC Nezam.

They confessed to their crimes before a metropolitan magistrate court in the port city today in connection with a case filed over the recovery of the stolen mobile phones.
