46pc teaching posts vacant: minister

Over 46 percent teaching positions are vacant at public medical and dental colleges, Health Minister Zahid Maleque informed the parliament yesterday.

 There are 3,829 sanctioned posts for professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers at government medical colleges, the minister said, adding that 2,057 teachers are currently working at these medical colleges across the country.

He made the remarks while answering a query of Jatiya Party lawmaker Mujibul Haque.

“Most of the vacant posts are in basic subjects,” he said.

The government is working to appoint teachers in the vacant positions, the minister said.

Answering another query from Abul Kalam Md Ahasanul Hoque Chowdhury, he said there are 36 government medical colleges in the country with a capacity of 4,068 students.

Also, there are 70 private and six under supervision of Bangladesh army with enrollment capacity of 6,231 and 375 students respectively, he further said.

Government medical colleges have been set up at important districts, Zahid Maleque added.
