400 illegal structures demolished

The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in a drive yesterday knocked down over 400 illegal structures on both sides of Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Nayarhat and Islampur areas of Savar.

RHD also demolished six offices of illegal “Balu Mohals” (sand enclosures) established beside the highway and Bongshi river. The drive started at 9:30am and continued till 4pm.

Deputy Secretary Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Faruki, also executive magistrate and estate and law officer of RHD, Dhaka, led the eviction drive in cooperation with local administration, police and Rab.

“We gave ultimatum to owners of the sand enclosures to remove those. If they do not free the highway land or river banks, we will take actions against them,” he added.

All illegal structures will be demolished in the ongoing drive, he said.

Executive engineer of Manikganj RHD Emdad Hossain, its sub-divisional engineer Abdur Rahim and sub-assistant engineer Shahanur Rashid were present during the drive.
