4 sentenced to death

A Chattogram court yesterday sentenced four persons to death for killing a businessman after abduction in 2008.

Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal’s acting Judge Abdul Halim passed the verdict.

The convicts are Md Mohsin, Imran, Furkan, and Abdul Kader, said court sources.

The court also sentenced two other accused -- Md Abdul Monaf and Shahdat Hossain -- to life-term imprisonment, said public prosecutor Advocate Ayub Khan. The duo was also fined Tk 2 lakhz each, in default of which they will have to serve two more years in jail, he added.

Monaf was present in the court during pronouncement of the verdict, while the other convicts are on the run.

According to the case statement, Ranjan Singha was abducted by miscreants from Asadnagar under Chikandandi union of Hathazari on May 8, 2008. He was shot dead after being beaten up, and his body was dumped in a pond in Jugir Hat area. Police recovered the body after the victim’s wife Smriti Rani Chandra filed a case.

PP Ayub said a court framed charges against the accused on May 11, 2011, and nine persons had testified to court in the case.
