3 young mountaineers honoured for conquering Yala Peak

Three young Bangladeshi mountaineers were accorded reception yesterday for conquering Yala Peak, a 5,525-metre summit of the Himalayas, in Nepal recently.

They are: Mohiuddin Mahi, co-founder of Rope4 Outdoor Education, a non-government organisation; Sadia Sharmin, a student of Dhaka University; and Masud Parvej Sujon, a student of Sylhet Engineering College.

Rope4, which arranged the expedition as part of its “Mission Himalaya 2018” project, honoured the mountaineers through organising a flag-in ceremony at Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) in Dhaka.

On October 23, the three-member team, led by Mahi, started the expedition. They conquered the Yala Peak at 9:20am on October 29 and returned to Bangladesh on November 3.

Speaking at the ceremony, BPC Chairman Akhtaruz Zaman Khan Kabir said the achievement of the young mountaineers help in positively branding the country.

Rope4 Chairman Marufa Haque said, “Nowadays, youngsters are dependent on technology for entertainment and recreation. We launched the project to inspire them to pursue a healthy life,” added Marufa.

The Daily Star is the youth engagement partner of the expedition. Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, Peak69, Ghuddi, First Security Islami Bank Ltd and Peoples Radio 91.6 FM are other partners of the initiative.
