3 held with fake notes

Police claimed to have arrested three members of a currency counterfeiting gang and seized fake notes amounting around Tk 46 lakh from their possessions in Kamrangirchar area of Old Dhaka on Friday.

The arrestees are Jibon, 28; Jamal Uddin, 32; and Babul, 24.

According to police, the forgers become active ahead of Eid, as a lot of money changes hands during the period for shopping.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, said a team of Detective Branch conducted the drive in East Rasulpur area around 5pm and arrested Sabuj and Jamal from a house. Fake notes of Tk 7 lakh were seized from them.

Gleaning information from the duo, law enforcers raided a house in Islambagh of Chawkbazar around 7:30pm and arrested Babul with fake notes of Tk 38.68 lakh, he added.

A laptop, two printers and equipment for printing counterfeit notes were seized during the drives.

In primary interrogation, the arrestees said they used to circulate the notes in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna and other districts. A case was filed with Kamrangirchar Police Station.
