26 injured in police-JCD clash

At least 26 persons were injured in a clash between police and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Mymensingh city's Char Kalibari area yesterday afternoon.

Six policemen were also injured in the incident. They were given first aid at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said police.

Quoting locals, police said marking the death anniversary of BNP president Ziaur Rahman, JCD Mymensingh city unit organised a rally on Char Kalibari Madrasa ground around noon.

The JCD activists started throwing brick bats towards law enforcers when a police team went to the spot and asked them to stop the meeting as it was organised defying guidelines of the ongoing pandemic, said Mymensingh police superintendent Mohammad Ahmar Uzzaman.

Police lobbed teargas shells and fired blank shots to bring the situation under control, said the SP. They also detained eight persons for their involvement in the attack on police, he said.

Abu Daud Raihan, secretary of JCD Mymensingh district (south) unit, refuted the allegations. He claimed that police attacked them without any reason and foiled the rally around 1pm.

He said some 18-20 JCD and BNP men were injured in the attack.

They were treated at private hospitals and clinics outside the district, said the JCD leader.
