Trying to Secure Passports

2 Rohingya women held in N'ganj

Two Rohingya women were arrested in Narayanganj yesterday afternoon, while trying to get Bangladeshi passports made concealing their Myanmarese nationality.

They were detained from Narayanganj regional passport office at Jalkuri, and handed over to police.

The two women are Nur Kayes, 22, daughter of Amir Hamza of Bagbunia camp's  A-1 centre under Ukhia thana of Cox's Bazar, and Rashida Akter, 20, daughter of Abul Kalam of Balukhali camp I-20 centre in the same area.

Siddhirganj Police Station Inspector (investigation) Nazrul Islam said the two women went to the regional passport office to get Bangladeshi passports through brokers, claiming to be residents of Narayanganj. Inconsistencies were found in the statements of the two women which raised suspicion among passport officials. At one stage of interrogation, their real identities were revealed. The officials at the passport office detained them and handed over to police.

The two confessed to police that although they are Myanmar nationals, a group of brokers lured them with the promise of sending them to Malaysia in exchange for Tk 1 lakh.

Siddhirganj Police Station OC Abdus Sattar said cases would be filed against them for concealing information.
