2 held over raping woman in Savar

Police yesterday arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a woman in Kaundia area of Savar on Friday night.

The arrestees are Raihan and Alamin Joy, said Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station. They have been placed on a two-day remand for interrogation.

The accused were acquaintances of the 19-year-old woman's husband, a local shopkeeper, the OC said.

Quoting him, the police official said the couple bought a mobile phone on loan from Raihan a few days ago. As the husband could not repay the money on Friday, Raihan had an altercation with him.

Around 11pm that night, Raihan, Alamin and three others forcibly took the couple to a secluded place. They tied the husband, raped her and left.

On Saturday, the husband filed a case with the police station accusing the five.

The OC said the victim is being treated at One-stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Drive is underway to arrest rest of the accused, he added.
