2 dead in separate road accidents in Dhaka

Two persons were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka's Jatrabari and Khilkhet areas early this morning.

The deceased were identified as Prasenjit Kumar, 25, a toll collector at Postogola Bridge and Ashique Abdullah Helal, 42, a staffer at a private security company.

Prasenjit was hanging from the window of a Dhaka-bound lorry from Mawa to collect toll at Postogola Bridge around 3:00am. An altercation took place between him and the lorry driver and the driver sped up to Jatrabari with Prasenjit still hanging from the window, said Sub-inspector Avijit Podder of Jatrabari Police Station, quoting the deceased's colleagues.

At one stage, Prasenjit was hit with a roadside concrete block. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the SI said.

Prasenjit's colleague Arman Hossain said the deceased had been collecting toll at the bridge for about a year.

"The lorry driver killed him. The way he died, it is not a road accident, rather murder," he said.

Meanwhile, Shamimul Islam, a sub-inspector of Khilkhet Police Station, said another victim Helal was talking to his colleague, standing on his motorcycle near in 300 feet area around 5:00am when a truck hit him, leaving him dead on the spot.

Hailing from Hizla Upazila in Barishal, Helal was in charge of the security company on that site.

Both the bodies were kept at DMCH morgue for autopsy.
