2 cops hacked by criminal during drive

Three people, including two policemen, were hacked by a wanted criminal when the law enforcers conducted a drive to arrest him in Chattogram city's Asadganj area early yesterday.

The accused, Azad, was also shot when police opened fire in self-defence. He was eventually arrested with a machete, said police.

The three injured are Assistant Sub-Inspector Abu Hayat and Constable Rasel Mia of Patharghata police outpost, and Kafil Uddin, a resident of Azadganj area.

Police took Kafil's help to conduct the drive.

Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohsin said Constable Rasel was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) with forehead injuries while ASI Abu Hayat and Kafil received treatment at the same hospital.

Bullet-hit Azad was also undergoing treatment there in police custody, he said, adding that he is accused in seven criminal cases.

“Azad started hacking police when they entered his house,” said the OC.
