2 Black Kites freed

Two Black Kites were freed yesterday, weeks after being rescued and treated at Wildlife Conservation Centre in Sylhet.

Both birds were freed at Parairchak area of Dakshin Surma upazila, after their conditions improved following treatment at the conservation centre, said Veterinarian Monzur Kader Chowdhury.

One of the birds, a baby Black Kite, was rescued from a house in Kazi Elias area in the city by environmental activists of Bhoomishontan Bangladesh on March 21, while the other was rescued by animal rights organisation Pradhikar earlier in March.

The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Acci-pitridae, which includes many other diurnal raptors.

It is considered to be the world's most abundant species of Accipitridae, although some populations have experienced dramatic decline or fluctuations.

“People are becoming aware of animal rights and we are getting more distress calls these days, whereas, even a couple of years ago, nobody cared about the cause,” said Ashraful Kabir, coordinator of Bhoomis-hontan Bangladesh.
