1st M'singh city polls on May 5

The maiden election to Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC) will be held on May 5, Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed announced yesterday.

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used at all voting centres, he said while announcing the MCC election at a press conference after a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) at the Nirbachon Bhaban in Dhaka.

There will be 130 polling centres at 46 wards of the city corporation, he said.

As per schedule, EC set April 8 for submission of nomination papers, April 10 for scrutinising the nominations and April 17 for withdrawal of the nominations.

Government on April 2 last year recognised Mymensingh as the country's 12th city corporation.

The total land area of the new city corporation is 91.135 square kilometres. The total population of the area is 471,858.
