11 students hurt in attack at Rajshahi’s Shah Makhdum Medical College

At least 11 students of Rajshahi's Shah Makhdum Medical College and Hospital were injured yesterday evening in an attack allegedly by the college's managerial staff after the students entered the campus to protest the privately-run college's substandard education.

All the students were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with injuries sustained from blows with sticks, iron rods and hammers, our Rajshahi correspondent reports quoting the police and students.

The students have been staging protests for more than a year, and investigating their allegations, the government shut down the college early November.

One of the injured students, preferring not to be named, said they went to the campus hearing that a team of high-ups from the education ministry was visiting the campus to reconsider the government decision.

"We wanted to lodge our protest against reopening of the college. The institution has already destroyed lives of many students," he said.

As the students entered the campus, around 20 people including outsiders and the college's managerial staff closed the gates and attacked them. They chased the students around the campus and beat them, the students claimed.

Later, the police rescued them.

"We went to the scene hearing the news and found the injured students locked inside the campus," Sirajum Monir, OC of Chandrima Police Station, said.

He said, a case was filed against nine named and 12 unnamed accused persons with the police station.

The OC said most of the accused persons are the college's managerial staff.
