11 killed, 22 injured in road accidents across country

Eleven people were killed in separate road accidents across the country in one day yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.

Among them, five people were killed in two accidents at the two ends of Bangabandhu bridge in Tangail and Sirajganj.

In Sirajganj, three people were killed and 20 injured after a speeding bus hit a motorbike and plunged into a ditch beside Dhaka-Bogura highway in Talukber Bazar area under Kamarkhand upazila.

Of the deceased, Shapla Khatun (27) could be identified while identities of the other two are yet to be known, reports our Pabna correspondent.

Sayed Sahid Alam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge West Zone Police Station, said the accident took place around 1pm as the bus driver lost control over the vehicle while trying to save the bike.

The injured were taken to Sirajganj General Hospital, he said.

In Tangail, two people were killed when a bus ran them over at the east end of Bangabandhu bridge near Golchakkar in Bhuapur upazila.

Mayeen Uddin Hamim (25) and Sadia Islam Nodi (26), students of Medical Assistant Training School in Tangail, died on the spot, said Jayed Abdullah Bin Sarwar, sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.

Police chased the bus down from Kamakkhar intersection area in Kalihati upazila. They seized the bus but its driver and helpers managed to flee, SI Jayed added.

Protesting the accident, fellows of the deceased blocked Tangail-Mymensingh road in front of Tangail General Hospital, demanding arrest and capital punishment for the driver.

Students were demonstrating to realise their demands till filing of this report last night.

In Faridpur, two people were killed as a motorbike they were riding and a truck collided head-on at Ghanshampur in Sadar upzaila.

Cattle traders Idris Paul (49) and Monayam Hossain (41) died instantly, said police.

Quoting locals, Md Belal Hossain, SI of Sadar Police Station, said the accident took place when the motorbike tried to overtake a three-wheeler.

In Lalmonirhat, a college student was killed after being hit by a truck on Lalmonirhat-Burimary highway at Namuri in Aditmari upazila.

The deceased was identified as Nurnabi Islam, an eleventh-grader of Duhuli Technical College, said Aditmari Police Station OC Saiful Islam.

In Narayanganj, Sentu Mia (45) was killed after a covered van hit him while he was crossing Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road in Fatulla.

Fatulla Model Police Station OC Aslam Hossain said Sentu died on the spot. The body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy.

Police detained the driver. Legal actions will be taken in this regard, the OC added.

In Sunamganj, two people were killed and two others injured as the bike they were on hit a roadside electric pole in Brahmangaon area under Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Pabel Ahmed (17) and Sohag Miah (17). Both hailed from Maijbari village in the upazila. Pabel was supposed to attend Dakhil examination this year.

The accident occurred after the rider lost control over the bike, OC Sohidur Rahman of Sunamganj Police Station quoted locals as saying.

Locals rushed them to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared Pabel and Sohag dead and referred the injured to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the OC added.
