Gtv News editor remanded for 'torturing wife'

A Dhaka court yesterday placed the news editor of Gtv on a one-day remand after he was arrested in a case filed for torturing his wife and demanding dowry from her.

Rakibul Islam alias Mukul, 37, was arrested in Segunbagicha around 2:30am, said Masud Parvez, a sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station.

Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey passed the order after police produced Mukul before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Mukul's wife Naznin Akhter Tonni, senior reporter of Dainik Janakantha, filed the case on Thursday.

Another woman was also accused in the case, the police official said.

Naznin said her husband had been torturing her since August last year.

"He kicked and slapped me even when I was pregnant. He beat me up frequently for no reason. Such physical torture caused early delivery of my baby," she claimed adding that a few months ago she learned that her husband had been having an affair with another woman for over a year.
