A new High Court bench was assigned today to dispose of bail petitions filed by Mirza Abbas, BNP-blessed mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation polls, in two vandalism and arson cases.

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha assigned the one-member bench with Justice Md Ruhul Quddus, who will now fix a date for hearing and disposing of the petition.

On April 15, two HC judges passed a split orders on the bail petitions in the cases.

Of the judges, Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique had granted three weeks anticipatory bail to Mirza Abbas and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore rejected his bail petition and ordered to surrender him before a lower court immediately.

The two judges on Thursday sent the petition and split orders to the chief justice.

Abbas, BNP's Dhaka city convener, currently stands accused in at least 60 cases. He is also facing an arrest warrant issued in connection with a graft case lodged by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
