Chittagong Zoo has been graced by the birth of triplet tiger cubs, born to tiger couple Raj and Pori – their first offspring since they were brought in 2016.

The mother and the cubs have been kept in separate confinements for now, our local staff correspondent reports quoting Dr Shahadat Hossain Suvo, deputy curator.

“The pups and their mother will be provided with intensive care and kept out of visitors’ eyes for some while,” he said. “We will ensure all necessary support for their health.”

The sexes of the cubs are yet to be ascertained and the process usually takes a few weeks. After that period, the baby tigers will be given names.

According to the expert, the mother tiger can become ferocious and ruthless after giving birth, which may damage the condition of the cubs and even lead to their death.

Now, the number of tigers in Chittagong zoo has increased to five. Before the birth of the cubs, only Raj and Pori were the only tigers drawing visitors’ attention.

This will enhance the beauty of the zoo and will attract more visitors, officials at the zoo said.

On March 6 this year, six zebras were brought to the zoo by spending Tk 48 lakh from South Africa. The zoo authority is now planning on buying six Kangaroos from South Africa.
