NCC polls: LDP, BKP expel candidates

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Bangladesh Kalyan Party (BKP), two components of BNP-led 20-party alliance, today expelled their mayoral runners in the Narayanganj City Corporation election for violating their parties’ decision.

Rashed Ferdous of Kalyan Party is contesting in the poll with electoral symbol wristwatch while Kamal Prodhan of LDP with umbrella.

“Rashed Ferdous did not stay away from the Narayanganj City Corporation election according to the party decision. Thus, he has been expelled,” Kalyan Party Secretary General MM Aminur Rahman told The Daily Star.

Earlier, all components of 20-party alliance decided to work for the victory of BNP-backed mayor candidate in the NCC polls, Aminur said.

“We ask Rashed Ferdous to refrain from the election according to the decision but he denied,” Aminur said.

Besides, LDP Secretary General Reduan Ahmed said that he has asked Kamal Prodhan to withdraw his candidature according to the decision of the 20-partry alliance but he did not comply with the call.

“It is a blatant violation of our party’s political norms and discipline and that’s why we have expelled Prodhan,” he added.

Contacted, Rashed Ferdous told our Narayanganj correspondent that he did not get any official letter in this regard yet. Even, BNP-backed mayoral candidate Shakhawat Hossain did not ask him to stay away from the polls.

On the other hand, Kamal Prodhan said his party will commit a political mistake if he has been expelled for taking part in the polls.

“I have been waiting for instruction from my party high command until yesterday [Sunday]. But I was not given any directive to withdraw my candidature. Even BNP-backed mayoral candidate did not ask me to do so,” Kamal told our local correspondent.
