Her melancholic eyes bear a reflection of uncertainty of her fate. Lying on the hospital bed she might have been thinking about the future of her three children, since she is yet to recover from the brutality  she had suffered in December last year.

All she wanted is to put food in her children's mouths every day as her husband Sikandar Ali do not take care of them anymore.

But on December 4, one Rasel, 30, a construction worker, hacked her indiscriminately with a kitchen knife while Nasrin Begum, 30, was talking with her sons in her rented house in Vadail area of Savar as she refused his proposal.

Her life has been turned upside down since the incident.

Nasrin -- a construction worker -- is groaning in pain at Enam Medical College Hospital since last month. With multiple stab injuries in several parts of her body, including the left side of her face and hands, she is now undergoing treatment at the neurosurgery unit at the hospital.

Dr Tanveen Kamal, register of the neurosurgery unit, said, “She is still in danger. We have already completed five surgeries. But she needs one more surgery on her head, which will cost around Tk 2.5 lakh.”

“Nasirn can see but cannot speak,” said Dr Tanveen, adding, she may lose her memory.

Doctors at the hospital said it is necessary that Nasrin's family members stay by her side for her fast recovery but none of her family members, including her parents, have yet come to see her in the hospital.

The hospital staff has been bringing food for Nasrin but she needs money for her treatment, said the doctor.

“I really want to see my daughter and stay by her side but could not go to the hospital for having no money,” said Nasrin's mother Forida Begum over the phone.

“I do not know where to get money for my daughter's treatment. I live on a three-decimal government land,” said Nasrin's father Hanif Sheikh, 70, of Jonary village in Khulna. He said Nasrin's children are living with him in the village.

Rasel who fled the scene immediately after the incident is yet to be arrested. On December 7, Nasrin's father filed a case with Ashulia Police Station accusing Rasel. According to the case statement, Rasel had been stalking her for a long time. Ruhul Amin, sub-inspector of the station, said, “We have not been able to arrest Rasel as details about his identity could not be known yet.”
