Mystery shrouds shooting of three in Chapai

Victims make contradictory statements at RMCH

Three people were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) after being shot yesterday.

The victims identified themselves as residents of Sonapur village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, said Moinul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station.

He, however, said they did not find anyone by the names -- Abdus Sattar, 48, his son Shahidul Islam, 28, and Muktar Hossain -- in Sonapur.

Moinul quoted the victims saying that they were shot by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) while they were fishing in the river Padma near Raghunathpur frontier of Shibganj around 5:00am.

But the law enforcers did not find evidence of such incident there, he said.

Sattar could not talk as he was shot in the face and legs. Shadidul was shot in the neck and legs while Muktar in the hands and legs.

Talking to reporters, Shahidul and Muktar claimed that Indian BSF opened fire on them on the spot while they were returning home from India with cattle.

An attendant, whose identity could not be known immediately, echoed them. He, however, was not around for further comments later.

Talking to our Chapainawabganj correspondent at 4:30pm, Maj Nazmul Alam, acting commanding officer of the 9th Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh in the district, said they had no information that any Bangladeshi was shot by BSF there.
