Murder accused gets bail after 19 years

The High Court yesterday granted six months’ bail to Nuruzzaman Laltu, the then leader of banned outfit Banglar Communist Party in Chuadanga, in a murder case.

The bail has cleared the way for Laltu to walk out of jail where he had been confined to for 19 years over the killing of Sunil Kumar, from Alamdanga of Chuadanga, in 1993.

Sunil’s brother Anil Kumar filed the case against Laltu, now 72.

The HC also ordered the trial court in Chuadanga to conclude the trial proceedings of the murder case in four months.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim granted the bail to Laltu after hearing a bail petition filed by Laltu.

Deputy Attorney General Farhad Ahmed told The Daily Star that Laltu, accused in several other criminal cases, was granted bail considering his old age and the fact that he has spent 19 long years in jail custody.

In response to then home minister Mohammad Nasim’s call, Laltu and his accomplices surrendered with their arms in 1998, he added.

Laltu will be released from jail following the HC order as the proceedings of other the cases against him have been finished, Farhad also said.
