More govt support stressed to promote culture

A lack of cultural activities due to insufficient government patronisation helped communal and fundamental forces flourish, speakers said at a discussion yesterday.

Inadequate budget allocations have created a void in the cultural sector over the years. A lack of co-ordination among cultural activists is also to blame in this regard, they said.

Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee arranged the discussion on “Cultural Movements of Bangladesh to Tackle Communalism and Fundamentalism” at Jatiya Press Club.

Theatre personality Ramendu Majumdar said cultural organisations played a significant role in different cultural and socio-political movements. At the event, he delivered “Prof Kabir Chowdhury Memorial Lecture".

Veteran cultural personality Kamal Lohani and Jatiya Press Club President Shafiqur Rahman also spoke.
