Demand money from two CCC councillors

Unidentified miscreants yesterday demanded money from two Chittagong City Corporation ward councillors through spoofing the official phone number of the deputy commissioner.

One of the councillors, Jahurul Alam Jasim of North Pahartoli (Ward 9), told The Daily Star that a person introducing himself as the DC called him around 2:00pm and asked him to send Tk 20,000 to a bKash number if the councillor wanted to get government allocation for development works in his area.

“I became confused as it was the DC's official number. So, I told the caller to meet me, but he refused,” said Jasim. “I phoned the  DC after 30 minutes and told him about the incident. He said he did not call me.”

Contacted, DC Ilias Hossain said two CCC councillors reported similar incidents of demanding money to him.

“I contacted the mobile phone carrier and informed them of the matter,” he said. “They informed me “I also asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to take necessary steps in this regard,” he said. “People have to be cautious about these sorts of fraudulent activities.” that my number was spoofed using a  computer.”
