2 jailed for misappropriating Dhaka Model Degree College development project fund

A Dhaka court today sentenced two people including a deputy assistant engineer, to different terms of punishment in a case filed for misappropriating Tk 8.76 lakh allotted to a development project of Dhaka Model Degree College in 2015.   

The convicts are: Md Asaduzzaman, a deputy assistant engineer of Dhaka Zilla Parishad, and M Joynal Ahmed, proprietor of M/S Lia Enterprise.

Asaduzzaman was jailed in absentia for five years’ rigorous imprisonment while Joynal for three years’ rigorous imprisonment.

Asaduzzaman was fined Tk 1,00000, in default of which he will have to suffer one month more in jail while Joynal was fined Tk 10,000, defaulting to pay the fine, he will have to serve one month in jail.

Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of the Special Judge Court-9 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of Joynal. The judge acquitted Mozammel Majumder as his involvement was not proved.  

The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender, said judge in his verdict.

According to the prosecution, it was alleged that Asaduzzaman along with others misappropriated Tk 8, 76, 270 which was allotted for development project of Dhaka’s Mirpur Model Degree College in 2015.

Later on May 7 of 2015, ACC assistant director Abu Bakar Siddique filed a case with Uttara Purba Police Station against them. The ACC then pressed charges against the three on February 22 of 2016.
