Military police attacked at Dhaka checkpost

An unknown assailant stabbed a member of military police at Kochukhet checkpost in Dhaka this morning.
Confirming the incident, Syed Qaiyum Zaman Khan, deputy commissioner of Mirpur zone of police, told The Daily Star that a man has been arrested in this connection.
The injured victim, Samidul Islam, who is aged between 28 and 30, was taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka, added Syed Qaiyum Khan.

Asked about the identity of the attacker who was chased down later, the police officer declined to do so for the sake of investigation.
Describing the man, locals said he was wearing shirt and lungi and has beard.
In a press release issued in the afternoon, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said a pedestrian struck an on-duty military police with a sharp weapon from behind in Kafrul.
"The military police has been slightly injured. Other on-duty members of the armed forces detained a suspected attacker,” reads the press release.
An investigation is already underway to unearth the details, it adds.
The incident took place at 8:45am when Samidul was working at a checkpost at Kachukhet near Dhaka Cantonment along with 3-4 colleagues.
A man, aged around 30, crossed the road from the other side and swooped on the military police with a machete, witnesses said.

The attack left injury marks in Samidul’s right neck, left cheek, hand and fingers of the victim, witnesses told The Daily Star.
To make his way, the attacker brandished the blood-smeared machete asking people not to go near him, witnesses said.
Locals and law enforcers chased him this time.

After running around 400 yards, the attacker entered a five-storied building near North Kafrul High School.
As people encircled him, he tried to scare away people with the machete.
Law enforcers asked him to surrender. After 15 minutes, he complied, witnesses say.
In separate incident on November 4, assailants stabbed to death a police constable at a checkpost in Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka.
Constable Mukul Hossain, 23, member of a five-member team of Ashulia industrial police, was at a checkpost in the area when miscreants attacked them.
Another policeman, Ibrahim Mollah, an assistant sub-inspector of Darus Salam Police Station, was killed in a knife attack at a checkpost in the capital’s Gabtoli area on October 22.
