Medical intern held over rape allegation

An intern doctor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital was detained yesterday following rape allegation brought against him by a patient's family members, police said.

Allegations were brought against one Makam-e-Mahmud, who was on duty at the ear, nose and throat (ENT) ward of the medical college during the incident.

The victim, a 15-year-old girl, was attending to her grandmother admitted at same ward.

According to the case statement, at 1:00am Makam-e-Mahmud called the girl to the adjacent doctor's room and allegedly raped her.

Dr Debapada Roy, deputy director of the hospital, confirmed the matter.

“After taking their statements and checking the video footages, we admitted the victim at One-stop Crisis Centre (OCC) in the hospital and also handed over the accused to the police,” he said.

Golam Kawsar Dastagir, assistant commissioner of Kotwali Police Station, said the victim's family filed a case.
