Mayoral aspirants file nomination papers

Mayoral aspirants yesterday submitted their nomination papers to contest the Sylhet, Rajshahi and Barisal city corporation polls, to be held on July 30.

In Sylhet, nine mayoral candidates including Awami League's Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and BNP's Ariful Haque Chowdhury submitted their nomination papers to the Election Commission office yesterday.

Before submitting his nomination paper, Ariful resigned from the post of Sylhet City Corporation mayor. He handed over his resignation letter to AZM Nurul Haque, SCC chief executive officer; and submitted a copy to the EC.

Badar Uddin submitted his nomination paper at EC's regional office in Machimpur area, reports our correspondent.

Meanwhile, Badruzzaman Selim, general secretary of BNP's Sylhet city unit, submitted his nomination paper as an independent candidate.

Other mayoral candidates are CPB-BASOD's Abu Jafar; Islami Shashontantra Andolon's Dr Moazzem Hossain; and independent candidates Kazi Jasim Uddin, Ehsanul Haque Taher and Moktadir Hossain.

RAJSHAHI CITY CORPORATION

Six persons submitted their nomination papers for the RCC mayoral race.

Accompanied by a number of activists, Rajshahi city Awami League president AHM Khairuzzaman Liton went to the EC office and submitted his nomination paper.

Immediate past mayor and Rajshahi city BNP president Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul also did the same. Gono Shanghati Andolon's Rajshahi coordinator Murad Morshed submitted his nomination paper as an independent candidate.

The others are Jatiya Party's Washiur Rahman Dolon; Bangladesh Jatiya Party's Habibur Rahman; and Islami Andolon Bangladesh's Shafikul Islam.

BARISAL CITY CORPORATION

Eight mayoral candidates filed their nomination papers for the BCC election.

The candidates are AL's Serniabat Sadik Abdullah; BNP's Mojibor Rahman Sarowar; Jatiya Party's Iqbal Hossain Tapas; Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal's Dr Manisha Chakrabarty; Communist Party of Bangladesh's Abul Kalam Azad; Islamic Andolon Bangladesh's Obaydur Rahman Mahbub; Khelafat Majlish's Mahbub Alam; and independent candidate Bashir Ahmed Junu.
