Mathletes receive grand reception

The six-member Bangladesh team, a member of which that brought Bangladesh's first gold in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) this year, were felicitated in a grand event yesterday.

Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BdMOC); Prothom Alo, and Dutch Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) jointly organised the reception at the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) auditorium in the capital.

Apart from the gold medal won by Ahmed Zawad Chowdhury, three others won bronze medals and two received “honourable mentions”. Bangladesh secured 41st place among 107 participating countries at the 59th edition of IMO.

Zawad, from Cantonment English School and College in Chittagong, scored 32 out of 42 to secure his medal.

Tamzid Morshed Rubab, Joydeep Saha and Tahnik Noor Samin, all from Notre Dame College are the bronze medal recipients, while Rahul Saha from Dhaka College and Soumitra Das from Police Lines High School, Faridpur won honourable mentions.

Speaking at the programme, Zawad said it was his teacher who introduced him with mathematics olympiad in 2011.

“The achievement was possible because of the efforts of everyone involved with Bangladesh Mathematic Olympiad. I want to thank my parents for inspiring me in my journey,” Zawad said.

Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, president of BdMOC congratulated the team and said Bangladesh is now ahead of many developed countries in mathematics.

“Their achievement shows that we may not be a wealthy country but our merit is no less than that of those nations,” said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid.
